NO SCHOOL Monday, Februrary 17, 2025--Teacher Professional Development.
Washington's Birthday was the first federal holiday to honor an individual's birth date. In 1885, Congress designated February 22 as a holiday for all federal workers. Nearly a century later, in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February.

Imagination Library Board Celebrates National Book Month in October
Imagination Library Board Members volunteered to read to students at Independence Early Learning Center to help celebrate National Book Month, which is in October. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library project was initially launched nationally by Parton in 1995 as an early childhood reading initiative for children, birth to age 5. Its initiative provides focused, high quality, age-appropriate books for children. Authors are screened and selected annually to provide the most current and relevant reading material.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has had an active chapter in Independence for more than 20 years. Local children enrolled in the Imagination Library are mailed an age-appropriate book — totally free — directly to his or her address each month. In August 2024, more than 450 books were delivered to USD 446 children, both in English and Spanish, and at no cost to the family, regardless of income level.
Until 2022, the costs of the books and mailings were covered entirely by donations from local patrons, businesses and organizations, as well as small grants and contributions from the Independence Community Chest. In 2023, the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund received approval from the Kansas legislature to establish an Imagination Library of KS 501(c)(3), which currently provides for a 50% match for those costs associated with operating this program. A concerted effort to sustain this funding has been supported by the Kansas Legislature and Gov. Laura Kelly, culminating in the passage of SB 195 on March 15, 2024.
Local families may sign their children (birth to age 5) up for Imagination Library by completing a registration form at https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/affiliate/KSINDEPENDENCE/?chkAvalAddressData=eyJjYWxsYmFjayI6dHJ1ZSwiYWRkcmVzcyI6eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiVVMiLCJ6aXAiOiI2NzMwMSIsInN0YXRlIjoiS1MiLCJjaXR5IjoiSW5kZXBlbmRlbmNlIiwiY291bnR5IjoiTW9udGdvbWVyeSIsInN0cmVldCI6IiJ9fQ%3D%3D
Patrons may also pick up an registration form at the USD 446 Board of Education Office, 517 N. 10th Street.
