FACILITIES:

The two-story facility is one of two local elementary schools completed in 1939 and serves all fifth grade public school students residing in USD 446. The official 2000-2001 enrollment for Washington school is 171 students. Washington prepares the district's students for the transition from elementary to middle school.

The 2.25 acre Washington School site is bordered on the north by a minor arterial, Laurel Street, and on the south by Myrtle Street, classified as a collector street. Vehicle access to Washington is also available via local streets on the east and west by 4th and 5th streets. U.S. Highway 160 routes one block south of Washington.

Nearly 450 pupils were present for classes when Washington School opened in the beginning days of 1939. The new facility first served the student populations formerly housed in the old Washington and Longfellow buildings. Constructed at a total estimated cost of $170,000, federal WPA funds financed 45% of the project.

The 39,000 square-foot structure features solid reinforced concrete frame construction with an off-white stucco-like exterior surface. The school's floors, roof and inner hallway walls are solid reinforced concrete and are utilized as a tornado shelter. The building has carpet and linoleum in classrooms and offices and original terrazzo flooring in the corridors.

The first floor of Washington School accommodates the main office and reception area, two special education classrooms, and a 4,050-square-foot gymnasium/auditorium, which serves as a cafeteria for the school's breakfast and lunch programs. First floor also houses the school's half-time guidance counselor, a part-time psychologist, the nurses clinic, conference room, teacher work room, orchestra room, speech therapy and adaptive PE offices, and the Montgomery County Learning Center. The second floor is occupied by eight sections of fifth grade students, a computer lab, the school's library/media center, vocal music room and Title I math and reading programs.
