Accelerated Reader is an electronic software program designed to test a student's comprehension of books they have read. Students are tested at the beginning of the year to assess their reading range (ZPD). They must take AR tests on books within or above that range throughout the year. Students reaching progressive point levels are issued dollar certificates that they can redeem in the AR store.
Students and their reading teachers also set point goals each quarter. Every weekly deadline brings them closer to achieving 100% of their goal. Students who reach 100% of their goal by the quarter deadline receive a special treat or privilege.

Certification Levels:
Students also work toward certification levels. As each level of certification is met, the student moves his/her 'head' to the award wall for that level. The certification levels are:
Washington Reader: Read 3 books and pass quizzes within your ZPD, plus accumulate 5 points.
Independent Reader: Read and pass quizzes on 3 books within your ZPD, plus accumulate 10 points.
Super Reader - Read and pass quizzes on 3 books within your ZPD, and accumulate 25 points.
Advanced Reader - Read and pass quizzes within your ZPD, and accumulate 50 points.
Star Reader: Read and pass quizzes within your ZPD to accumulate 75 points.
Classic Reader - Read and pass quizzes within your ZPD, to accumulate 100 points or more.
Honors Reader - Read and
pass quizzes within your ZPD to accumulate 200 points or read 15 books from a
specific list of challenging, teacher-selected literature.
