Independence Middle School has 430 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The majority
of these students are involved in the IMS art program.
The students at IMS are introduced to the fundamentals of art through various
tools and materials in a variety of creative activities. These activities help
develop skills in observation, exploration, and in decision making. At the same
time, the students are encouraged to try to achieve a higher potential level in
their artistic abilities. Original and creative thinking and expression are
encouraged within the students.
An introduction to art appreciation is included in the IMS art curriculum. This
allows the students to understand and identify some of the major works of art
and artists and their influence.
