Construction of Lincoln Elementary School was completed in late 1939 and occupied by students in early January 1940.

School Overview:
Lincoln School, 701 W. Laurel, is situated in one of the communities oldest residential neighborhoods, eight blocks west of the Independence downtown central business district. The two-story facility serves all third and fourth grade public school students residing in USD 446.

Lincoln School has received full outcomes accreditation through both the Kansas State Department of Education's Quality Performance Accreditation process and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

With 16 regular classrooms and two special education classrooms, Lincoln School is air-conditioned and completely handicapped accessible. The average class size is 21 students. The first floor currently accommodates the main office and reception area, eight fourth grade classrooms, two special education classrooms, an Internet/multimedia computer lab and the 4,300 square-foot gymnasium/auditorium, which also serves as a cafeteria for the school's breakfast and lunch programs. In addition to eight sections of third grade students, second floor houses the school's library and media center, a 25-station computer lab, as well as the following special programs: guidance and counseling, Title 1 math and reading services, and speech therapy.

The two-acre neighborhood setting of Lincoln School has both residential and commercial uses. The area offers tree-lined streets, well-kept, single-family residential homes, and neighborhood shopping. Medical offices and the region's most complete medical care complex, Mercy Hospital of Independence, are located to the west and north of Lincoln School. Completed in 1939 at a total estimated cost of $128,250, federal WPA funds financed 45% of the Lincoln project.

The 41,712 square-foot structure features concrete frame structure with a white stucco exterior surfacing. The school's inner hallways have solid concrete roofs and are utilized as tornado shelters. The building has carpeted concrete floors in most classrooms and offices and original terrazzo flooring in the corridors.
