World Music Drumming
This course is offered for the 6th grade student and the course
is designed for one quarter. The emphasis is on the rhythms from
the West African and Latin cultures and the course is instructed
orally and aurally. The students learn about the cultures and
how blues, jazz and rock utilize these musical forms and
rhythms. The drumming concept fosters respect and citizenship
with each other. Moreover, the students also learn vocabulary as
well as tying into the social studies curriculum.
Guitar – 7th Grade
This course is offered for the 7th grade student and the course
is designed for one quarter. With a signed contract, the school
will provide an instrument for the student to use. Reading music
is stressed and the student will learn to read the first 5
strings in first position. A book is required and may be
purchased from the middle school.
Guitar – 8th Grade
This course is offered for the 8th grade student and the course
is designed for one semester. The student does not need to know
how to play the guitar, but should possess the desire to learn.
The student will learn to play lead guitar using the notes in
first position on all six strings. The student will also learn
to play rhythm guitar by learning 7 chord progressions and the
12-bar blues pattern. Barre chords will be taught using the
moveable E and A chords. Furthermore, simple bass will be
touched upon. This is a good foundation for a student who is
then interested in pursuing private lessons.
Choral Music
Choir – 7th Grade
This course is offered for the 7th grade student and is designed
for one quarter. Developing good choral technique and habits are
stressed as well as learning about the changing voice. The class
is separated by gender so that the music may be better enhanced
for the changing voice. The student will learn how to read an
octavo, learn to sing at least two parts independently, and will
learn how to read music. Sightsinging is utilized to enhance
music theory.
Choir – 8th Grade
This course is offered as a one semester course for 8th grade students. The
student will begin to sing 3- or 4-part music for mixed voices
that will prepare him/her for the high school choral program.
Foreign language is often introduced in the music literature as
well as a variety of music from various periods in music
history. The changing voice is also addressed along with good
choral technique and habits. Sometimes there are
cross-curricular projects that tie in with the choral
literature.

Clubs
MUSICO – 8th Grade
MUSICO is an organization for 8th grade music students. They
meet at least twice a month and plan various activities to
promote music in the school and in the community. They sponsor
the “Penny War” which raises funds for a community service
project called “Boo-boo” Bears for cancer patients. They also
sew the bears and give them to cancer patients throughout the
community. “Music in Our Schools Month” is something that they
work with during the month of March. The IMS Talent Show is
another project sponsored by this group. They also assist with
decorating the auditorium for concerts and with passing out
programs. |
