Kyler King, an Independence High School senior, and Jason Hall, a second grader at Eisenhower School, have been chosen as the May 2010 "Students of the Month” in the Independence public schools

The "Student of the Month" program is jointly sponsored by Community National Bank, Independence Cinemas, and the Independence Reporter.

Kyler is the son of Theresa and Kurt King and has two brothers, Chandler and Dallas.  He is treasurer of the IHS Student Council and an active member of the IHS Leadership Class, Spanish Club and Science Club.  He is a four-year member of the IHS Band and a 2-year drumline section leader.  An award-winning musician, Kyler has been a member of Jazz Band, Pep Band, Concert Band and Marching Band throughout his high school career.  At IHS he has participated in football, golf, swimming, cross country and basketball.  He is a member of the IHS Varsity Golf Team that won this year's 4A Regionals and will represent the Bulldogs at the KSHSAA State Golf Tournament on May 24 at Hesston.  Kyler will attend and play golf at ICC on a two-year sports management scholarship and then transfer to the University of Kansas to complete a degree in physical therapy and sports medicine.

Jason Hall was nominated for Student of the Month by his teacher, Susan Weaver.  According to Mrs. Weaver, Jason is a very hard worker in class and always completes his assignments on time and to the best of his ability.  She considers him a role model for other students in her classroom because he sets a positive example academically and with his behavior.  She said he is also kind and helpful and an asset in the classroom.  Jason is the son of Sheri Jabben and Jess Hall.  He has one brother, Jacob, and one sister, Mariana.

Initiated during the 2007 school year, the district-wide student recognition program honors one elementary student from grades kindergarten though fifth and one secondary school student from grades sixth through 12th.  Each school nominates one student each month, September through May.

Monthly recipients receive a $50 savings bond from Community National Bank and a free movie pass for their families provided by Independence Cinemas.

In addition, recipients are recognized in a specially-designed advertisement in the Independence Reporter and treated to lunch by their school principals.
