The original 1954-era auditorium chairs from Independence High School, 1301 N. 10th, will be available for purchase by the public on Sunday, May 16.
Independence school officials have announced the chairs will be sold in three-chair and four-chair sections at the cost of $5 per chair. A three-chair section will be sold for $15 and a four-chair section will sell for $20.
The available chairs can be viewed by clicking on the photo attachments below...
Due to the current installation of the seats, only one end of each 3-chair or 4-chair unit will include the art deco style “end cap” shown in the photos. Units without the decorative end caps will also be available, but that preference must be noted when the reservation is submitted.
Reserved chair sections will be available for pickup between 8 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 16.
School officials said the Sunday morning pickup time was established to accommodate IHS alumni who will be in town over the weekend for reunion festivities and plan to leave town early on Sunday.
Those wanting to reserve either a 3-chair section or 4-section for pickup must do so by no later than Wednesday, May 12. The chairs should be reserved online by sending an email to ihschairs@indyschools.com.
Email chair reservations must state the section length desired, with our without the decorative end cap, as well as the following contact information: name, address, best phone number, and email address.
Anyone without email access who wants to reserve a chair section for May 16 pick up should call the Independence USD 446 Board of Education Office at (620) 332-1800 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Cash or checks made payable to Independence USD 446 will be accepted at the time of pick up.
Originally installed at IHS when it opened to students in September 1954, the cast iron and wood theatre seating is being removed as part of a $17 million remodeling project at the high school. Planned renovations are scheduled to begin in late May, requiring removal of the auditorium seating to make way for a new performing arts center in the same high school space.
Due to the extensive renovations now underway at Independence Middle School, and the upcoming remodeling at IHS, no short-term storage space is available in the school district. Therefore, all reserved IHS auditorium chairs must be picked up on Sunday morning, May 16.
