Diversity Task Force to Sponsor Tony Melendez Concert By Chuck Schmidt
(Please see attachments below for additional information and complete concert schedule)
On April 28 and 29 the Independence Diversity Task Force will sponsor a concert by Tony Melendez. Students from all Independence Schools and some surrounding schools will attend a daytime concert on one of those days. On the evening of April 29 there will be a free community concert. Prior to the evening concert, Independence area clubs and organization will host a volunteer fair in the lobby of Memorial Hall. The purpose of the volunteer fair is to welcome new faces into leadership and civic involvement in Independence. In clarifying the purpose of this concert and volunteer fair the Diversity Task Force stated, “Tony represents an example of someone who has overcome a disability to do great things and is a person who inspires people to come together. We believe this is at the heart of bringing more shoes under the tables in our community.”
Local businesses and individuals have provided donations to help fund these concerts. Anyone wishing to donate to help defray the expenses is requested to contact Gwen Wilburn at the Independence Chamber of Commerce or a Diversity Task Force member. There will be a free will offering at the evening community concert.
