Mitch Shaw
Principal

Mr. Shaw grew up in Pittsburg,
graduated from Riverton High School where he played
baseball, football and wrestling. He attended college at PSU,
playing football 1987-1988 and graduating with honors. Married
his college sweetheart then moved to Randle, WA. He taught three years
until first daughter was born before moving to El Dorado for two
years, then onto Garnett for two additional years. After
Garnett, he spent the next seven years in Pittsburg, where he
spent three years as teacher and four as an assistant
principal. He taught French/social science, as well as, coaching football,
wrestling, and track. He received his Masters of Administration
and Education Specialist Degrees from Pittsburg State University
in 2001. He earned his District Administration License in 2005. Mr Shaw has enjoyed
the past few months getting to know the community, faculty and
staff. He is looking forward to meeting all the parents
and students of IHS.
Michael Long
Assistant Principal

Mr. Long grew up in
Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He graduated from College High School
and was involved with the Rodeo Club, Football, Wrestling,
Track, and ROTC in High School. He attended and graduated from
college at SWOSU in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He was in the college
ROTC program and worked as a campus police officer. Mr. Long
married a wonderful young lady and started a life in the U.S.
Army. They have twin boys who are now in college. He retired
from the U.S. Army in 1994. Mr. Long taught in San Marcos, TX.,
Van Vleck, TX., Woodward, OK and Dodge City. He coached High
School Football, Track, Soccer, Baseball, Power Lifting, Boys
and Girls Basketball, Volleyball and did Athletic Training. He
received his ESOL endorsement in 2003 and Masters in
Administration in 2005 from Fort Hays State University. Mr. Long
spent the last year and a half as a part-time
administrator/teacher/coach in Dodge City Kansas until coming to
Independence. Mr. Long is very excited to be at the home of the
Bulldogs.
Brad Fredrickson
Athletic Director/Assistant Principal

Mr. Fredrickson is
beginning his 24th year in education and 5th year as I.H.S.
Activities Director. Before coming to Independence, Mr.
Fredrickson coached wrestling for 14 years and was Athletic
director for 1 year at Plainville High School in Plainville,
Kansas. Mr. Fredrickson earned his B.S. form Central Missouri
State University and his M.S. form Fort Hays State University.
He and his wife Gayle, have 2 children and 2 grandchildren.
Sheryl Van Dyne
Counselor

Sheryl Van Dyne has taught school for 15 years
prior to becoming a professional counselor. A previous resident
of Independence, Mrs. Van Dyne taught at Head Start, substituted
at various elementary schools and taught four years at St.
Andrews. In 2000, Mrs. Van Dyne and family moved to Parsons,
where she taught middle school science and social science four

Savage
Counselor

Jamie Savage is
in the process of losing her Texas accent. She was born and
raised in South Texas. Mrs. Savage began her undergraduate
studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio and graduated
with a B.A. in 2002 from Sul Ross State University. In 2004,
she graduated with her M.Ed. in counseling from Sul Ross State
University. Prior to moving to Independence, Mrs. Savage taught
at a high school in Texas. In 2005, Mrs. Savage and her family
moved to Independence. While in Kansas, she has worked as a
counselor at Altoona-Midway High School, a teacher at
Independence Middle School, and has taught some night classes at
Independence Community College. Mrs. Savage has two daughters—Karlie
and Vaye. Her husband, Jeremy, works for Dart Energy. Mrs.
Savage loves helping people, talking, and watching movies.
