Welcome to Bulldog Boys Tennis. BULLDOGS CAPTURE THIRD STRAIGHT CLASS 4A TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! Coaches Comments: 05/02/08 - I think it would be an understatement to say it was another “good” day for Bulldog Tennis – this was close to a great day. The boys were really focused and played great tennis all day. Now, of course, we must focus on the State Tournament because dominating Sub-State only gets you to State, and getting to State is not our ultimate goal. I have already read about the other state qualifiers – Topeka Hayden’s doubles teams also finished first and second in their Sub-State, Hesston’s doubles teams finished first and third in theirs, DeSoto’s singles players finished second and third, there is an international student playing for KC Piper who is very good – so we have our work cut out for us. We will practice hard all week before leaving for State on Friday morning. Dan was very impressive once again. He has all the strokes, plus he is so quick and can get to anything. His match against Nick in the finals was an excellent tennis match. He is 32-5 on the year. This will be Dan’s third appearance at State. As a freshman he placed 5th in singles and last year was state champion in doubles with Andrew Posch. I was so pleased with the way Nick bounced back today. He had lost so much confidence on Thursday in his final with Dan that I wasn’t sure how he would respond today, but he showed what a competitor he is by winning a tough semi-final match against Toland from Iola and then playing really tough against Dan in the final. He is 27-6 on the year, and is only the fifth freshman in Bulldog history to qualify for state (others include Jeff King, Sherman Brown, Zach Willis and Dan Porter). Sam and Adam also showed how tough they are winning the final against their own teammates. That was a great tennis match, and perhaps had an appropriate ending with the seniors winning since it was their last home match of their career. Shane and Omar are both juniors so they have another year of Bulldog Tennis. Furthermore, Adam reached the 100 win milestone – the eighth player to do so (others include – Andrew Posch, Zach Willis, Sherman Brown, Tyler Smith, Matt Ysusi, Matt Kadel and Dan Porter) Shane and Omar had another very impressive day and routinely took care of business. They were looking forward to another re-match with Sam and Adam after barely losing to them yesterday and got even closer today. 05/01/08 - For starters, let me say it was another very good day for Bulldog Tennis and I was very pleased with our effort and our results. As a team I can see improvement with each match we play and we hopefully have not peaked yet because we have a big day ahead of us tomorrow and then next week at State. Furthermore, the stakes get a little higher with each of these tournaments. The top four finishers here today in singles and in doubles will get to play again tomorrow with the top four finishers from the Ft. Scott regional. Dan Porter (now 29-5 on the year) played like he was on a mission – and I’m not sure anyone could have defeated him today. He left no openings – he has flawless groundstrokes, changes the pace on the ball, hits a big slice serve until you get used to it then he hits the bullet, attacks the net at the appropriate time, and has perhaps the coolest demeanor on the court of any player I have ever coached. He reached the 100-career win milestone today – and is only a junior! (Only the 7th player in Bulldog history to have 100 wins) Nick (now 25-5 on the year) was rolling right along today and was playing quite well with his perfect textbook strokes – until he ran into Dan. In that match, Dan jumped out to an early lead and Nick lost some of his confidence and did not play up to his potential after that. From my playing days I know it is hard to keep your confidence when your opponent never misses anything – and that was the predicament Nick had today playing Dan. Sam and Adam (now 29-5 on the year) benefited from the tough Winfield Tournament last week because they continued to play exceptionally well. The “intra-squad” final was a great tennis match with lots of unbelievable points. There were a few momentum swings and Sam and Adam came on strong at the end of that match. If both teams continue to play that well we should do quite well tomorrow and then at State next week. Shane and Omar (now 29 –6 on the year) also had a tremendous day and a point here or there in the final match might have resulted in a different ending. They both are such gifted players and make an excellent team. In a way all our players had difficult final matches because they had to play their teammates – and that is hard to do at a competitive level since they are not really your enemy, but your friend and teammate.
