COURSE OUTLINETITLE: Computer Applications I LENGTH: 1 Semester GRADE LEVEL: 10-12 PREREQUISITE: 35 WPM using the touch-typing method or successful completion of Word Processing. TEXTBOOKS, PRACTICE SETS, and OTHER PUBLISHED MATERIALS: Comprehensive Approach Series: Office 2000, Glencoe McGraw-Hill, 2000. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will provide students with needed job skills using the Microsoft Office 2000 suite of software applications. Advanced features of Word 2000 and PowerPoint 2000 and the basics of Excel 2000 will be taught. Students will also develop skills in digital camera and scanner use. OPERATING SYSTEMS AND HARDWARE: Microsoft Windows Platform Pentium-class PC-based Workstations Course Outcomes The Learner will be able to discuss and/or demonstrate: WORD 2000 (Word Processing) Unit 1 – Basic Skills Unit 2 – Paragraph formatting, margins and tabs Unit 3 – Moving, copying and revising text Unit 4 – Printing and page formatting Advanced Skills – Mail merge, tables, columns, headers and footers, forms, templates, footnotes, graphics and drawing toolbar features, basic web page design and editing graphics. Excel 2000 (Spreadsheet) Unit 1 – Basic Skills Unit 2 – Developing a worksheet Unit 3 – Charts and graphs Unit 4 – Enhancing the worksheet (hyperlinks, auto formatting, graphics, borders, shading, fills, cell referencing, moving data between other applications, etc.) PowerPoint 2000 (Presentation) Unit 1 – Basic Skills Unit 2 – Developing a presentation Unit 3 – Customizing a presentation Unit 4 – Using advanced features (watermarks, hyperlinks, introduction to web page creation, etc.) Method of Teaching Incorporation of technical reading using individualized method, short lecture, demonstration, hands-on, time management, and problem-solving strategies. Pre-Test or Post-Test Eighth-grade students are tested in March. Those achieving 35 wpm with 3 or less errors are allowed to enroll in this class without completion of Word Processing class. Grading Methods A grade is given based on a combination of hands-on daily work, projects, tests and quizzes (weighted by teacher preference). |
